Homo Narrans

2016, wall print, film, mediation letters

The installation was a result of a commissioned for the Text and Its Performance, which took place at CSW Bunkier Sztuki in Kraków. It focused on the narrative approach to conflict resolution. Narrative mediation emerged from social constructionist theory and it proposes that people perceive reality through the prism of their culture and previous experiences, assigning particular meanings to what they see and creating narratives, which exclusiveness may lead to conflict. Narrative mediation is a way of resolving conflict (and understanding it as a natural element of social relations) without ruling about the blame, where both sides work together to create new, free from conflict and shared narrative. One of the main assumptions of this type of mediation is Michael White’s statement “the person is not the problem; the problem is the problem” – externalising conflict allows for moving attention from people in conflict to the situation of conflict, which helps to find a way towards mutual understanding. Hommo Narrans consisted of wall text, film and mediation letters. While the film and the text referred to theoretical principles of narrative mediation, the letters were a concrete example of coming out of a conflict. They were informed by the mediations I led in East London, as a volunteer for the Common Ground Charity.

Homo Narrans
